Social Media Marketing 101: 4 Mistakes You Shouldn’t Make

Social Media Marketing is a great way for a business to gain exposure and traffic. It can be done much cheaper than traditional marketing, so more and more entrepreneurs are doing it. Unfortunately there are some right and wrong ways of doing this thing we call social media marketing. I am going to share a few with you. Now before I dive deep into these, please understand that while some businesses may have used these tactics and have been successful, that does not mean you should do them.

Less Self-Promotion

You have to promote you and your business, and that is very understandable.  Most people hate sitting through commercials and just want to get to the content (the show they are watching). If all you are doing is self-promotion, you are not providing any real content. Provide valuable information and sprinkle in your self-promotion around great content. You will benefit by doing less of this in your social media marketing strategy greatly!

Ignoring SEO

This is something many entrepreneurs ignore. Hiring someone to do your SEO can be expensive. SEO does take a little bit of patience and a time commitment if you choose to do it yourself. There are plenty of resources out there (including right here) where you can get great SEO tips for your business. If you can afford to pay someone, do it. If not, take some time to do it yourself, but do not ignore it.

Thinking You Do Not Need to Create Content

I hear this a lot. Many entrepreneurs shy away from this because creating content IS time consuming, but worth it. You need to provide quality, useful content for your readers, and you can still sprinkle in some promotions. The latest Google updates, Panda and Penguin, have reinforced this even more. Content and social web go hand in hand, replacing black hat SEO techniques.

Lackluster Blog Commenting

Blog commenting is still seen as a waste of time to some. I often get feedback saying that it is time consuming. Do you see the theme here? Either they do not want to do it, or they do it, and do not add genuine meaningful comments, just for the sake of getting it done. A meaningful blog comment may intrigue someone to visit your site. A small general comment probably will not. If the blog is using a comment system such as Comment Luv, you get to leave a link so it’s easy for someone to click back to your site. That is a win!
